MORE

How did Local Queer ATX get started?

Local Queer began as a way to build connections within the queer community by holding local events around Austin that were inclusive and accessible.

What does community mean to y'all?

Queer people have a long history of needing to create space and community where we feel safe, supported, and connected. Not everyone in the community has the privilege of a supportive family or support system and that is why it is so important to build a network of supportive people who will take care of each other.

How do y'all support LGBTQIA2+ Austinites?

Local Queer supports the LGBTQIA2+ community by creating spaces that encourage people to make connections and be themselves. We hold monthly (or more) events with various locations so people in different parts of town can have something close to them and make an effort to plan events that are low cost/free to attend.

We strive to create an inclusive space for everyone in the LGBTQIA2+ community with an emphasis on creating space for those marginalized even within our own community. Our leadership team is 50% transgender and we will continue to hold space for trans people and celebrate them!

What do you hope to see more of in Austin's LGBTQIA2+ community?

My hope for the LGBTQIA2+ in Austin is that we continue to support each other and provide community and safety in a state that is determined to make us feel unwelcome.

ABOUT

We are queer and trans individuals who serve the LGBTQIA2+ community by creating space for individuals and families to feel seen, supported, and celebrated. The founders of Local Queer are Caleb, Joy, Chase, and Sam. Our identities are as different as our individual experiences and we think it is so important to create a space where everyone is welcome to embrace their true self.
