Are you sober-curious? Sober-curiousity has been gaining attention in recent years as more and more people become aware of the potential negative effects of alcohol on their overall health and wellbeing. Or maybe I'm just getting older... But this movement towards sobriety and moderation is especially relevant to LGBTQIA2+ communities, which are disproportionately affected by drug and alcohol abuse.
For many of us, alcohol and other substances are tried and true ways of coping with the stresses and challenges of living in a society that marginalizes and discriminates against us. Queer Hypervigiligence is real, and Austin may feel like a safe haven for our communities once night falls but it is impotant for us to cultivate alternative ways of finding support and conneciton.
One way that sober-curious individuals within LGBTQIA2+ communities can find support is through peer-to-peer groups like Queer Friends ATX, which offer a range of events.
And there are more sober-curious, queer-themed events and spaces locally, such as Sober Queer ATX and Sans Bar, which offer fun and inclusive ways to connect without the presence of alcohol.
For those looking to incorporate sober-curious practices into their daily lives, there are also a range of non-alcoholic, fun themed mocktail recipes that can help to add some joy and creativity to sober living.
Some fun mocktail recipes:
- The Lavender Collins: Combine 1 oz lavender syrup, 1 oz fresh lemon juice, and 4 oz club soda in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a Collins glass filled with ice. Garnish with a sprig of lavender and a lemon wedge.
- The Queer Mojito: Muddle 1 oz fresh mint, 1 oz simple syrup, and 1 oz lime juice in the bottom of a shaker. Add 1 oz coconut water and a splash of grenadine, then shake well with ice. Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice and top with club soda. Garnish with a mint sprig and a lime wedge.
- The Rainbow Fizz: Combine 1 oz pomegranate juice, 1 oz pineapple juice, and 1 oz orange juice in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a flute glass. Top with club soda and a splash of grenadine for a rainbow effect. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice.
- Bountiful Sprintz: Combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar in a pot and bring to boil, stir until sugar is dissolved. Add in 3 springs of rosemary and 1 cinnamon stick and turn off the heat. Let steep for 30 min. Remove Rosemary and Cinnamon and let syrup cool to room temperature. In a cup add 1oz of your syrup, and equal parts club soda and grapefruit juice. - Created by Hills and Holler co-founder, Brandon (they/them)
