Help amplify Queer voices & storytelling in Austin, TX.

Howdy! Hello! Hi!

Welcome to The Rise Times, an annual magazine and queer creative space dedicated to amplifying LGBTQIA2+ communities in Austin, Texas. We're committed to sharing the ideas, people, and spaces that make Austin a place we can all be proud to call home.

Growing up as a closeted queer individual in Texas, I found solace in the fact that Austin was known as a "weird" city. The slogan "Keep Austin Weird" embraced those who were different and celebrated creativity, innovation, and uniqueness. Traveling to West Texas each summer for bible camp and kid’s college I could feel the shift from “weird” to “traditional,” just like watching the greenery and trees fade to dust and oil fields. It doesn’t all feel political when you’re 10 though. Austin was accepting. The rest of Texas was not. It was simple.

When I came out in high school Austin was already consistently ranking as one of the best places to live for LGBTQIA2+ individuals, according to various national lists and indexes. Fast forward a decade, and now we’re the third densest LGBTQIA2+ metropolitan area in the United States, behind only San Francisco and Seattle/Portland. The undeniable presence of queer community in Austin has provided a sense of safety and belonging for me through the years.  When I was younger and on the cusp of multiple coming-outs. And today on the cusp of this deep community project. The people continue to outweigh the place.

But while Austin may wield an undeniable queer magic, the reality is we all still live in Texas - and there's inevitably something devastating on the horizon that will force us to recognize-despite the progress and acceptance our rainbow roads may represent, the state we call our home fundamentally lacks kindness and empathy. And may in fact, hate us. The politicians at least. It is seriously scary what Republicans imagine for Texas’ futures. So it’s endlessly crucial we continue to fight for the rights and representation of Queer Texans. Trans Texans. And for all our weird queer futures here.

Our city has long been known as a haven for weirdness and creativity, and we're proud to carry on that tradition as a visibly queer city with a vibrant and thriving LGBTQIA2+ community.

Here at The Rise Times, we're a group of Queer and Trans Texans who are passionate about sharing local stories and strengthening the community we love. We hope to show how important LGBTQIA2+ representation and visibility is across Texas while building a sense of connection and belonging among queer Austinites.

Thanks for joining us on this journey!
